Walter Glen Weeks, Sr. was born on June 10, 1925 in Lexington, MS. He passed away on September 28, 2013, at Highland Home Nursing Center in Ridgeland, MS. He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer Lafayette Weeks, Sr. and Nettie Hill Weeks of Lexington, MS and three brothers: Homer Lafayette Weeks, Jr., William Aubrey Weeks and Donald Shelby Weeks.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Harris Weeks and two sons. Walter "Glen" Weeks, Jr. married to Denise Alford Weeks of Monticello, Mississippi; they have two sons, Caleb Weeks and Levi Weeks. Russ Allen Weeks, married to RaeAnn Vangen-Weeks of St. Cloud, Minnesota; they have two sons, Nicholas Vangen-Weeks and Brett Vangen-Weeks. He is also survived by three sister-in-laws: Francis Weeks of Atlanta, Georgia; Rachel Weeks of Richland, MS and Carolyn Weeks of Monticello, MS, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Walter graduated from Madison high school in 1943 at the age of 17. He went to work at Parks Air College in Jackson, which was a part of the nation's first network of aviation training centers. He volunteered for the US Army in Hattiesburg, MS. He was assigned to the Parks Air College until it closed, then was transferred to Hattiesburg and sworn into the Reserve of the Air Force and the Air National Guard, where he served for five years. He flew in six combat missions as a waist gunner in a B-24 aircraft over enemy occupied territory of Germany and Italy.
He has always been known as a man who could fix anything. He worked as a mechanic, offshore and lastly for the City of Jackson as a master carpenter. He also had a green-thumb and for several years owned and operated Weeks Nursery in Monticello, MS.
At the age of 58, he married Ruth Harris Weeks and they were married for 31 years. He was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. They lived together in Jackson, Madison and most recently at Highland Home in Ridgeland, MS.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Wilson Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday, October 4 2013 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Wilson Funeral Home. The memorial service will be Saturday at 11:00 am in the chapel with burial in Bethshan Cemetery in Monticello, Mississippi.
