Early in Wes' life, he was a logger who worked in the woods harvesting timber the old fashioned way, with lots of sweat and labor, buck saws and teams of horses. Later, for over 60 years he was a cabinet maker and carpenter who built many of the homes in this area of the state. He could do beautiful things with wood and the skill of the craftsman passed with him. He loved to hunt deer and turkey during hunting season. Passing on the skill to his grandchildren and teaching others, the love of the sport. Wes was not a famous person but he was held in high regard by those who knew him the best.

He was a true friend, who could be relied upon, come sunshine or rain, Through the hard times, he worked to make the lives of others better and sacrificed to see that his family had what they needed. Wes was simple man who loved his family and cared more about their welfare than his own.

His family has many happy memories of him. Peggy remembers his struggle to teach her to drive in a pulp wood truck, Nena will always recall him bringing her his first tomato from the garden each year, Sherman says Wes was always there and taught him how to hunt, farm, and raise cows and was there when he shot his first deer and took his first turkey, Cathy fondly recollects going home with him to spend the night at his parent's house, and Charlotte recalls Wes spoiling her when her mother took away her bottle--he would always take her to Mr. Buford Holmes store to buy a new one and she got the color she wanted.

And if you will allow me, Jim Dunaway, I would like to share one of my own memories of Wes. It was a hot summer in 1999 when we were digging a footing in hard ground that had once been a gravel driveway. We were both about exhausted and I asked him" could we please go hire someone to do this part of the job" and he just laughed and said "you've got to be joking son; no one would do this except someone who loves you'.
