Mrs. Vera Celeste Ward, 88, of Silver Creek, MS was called home from this life on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at her residence in Silver Creek, MS. Celeste was born July 23, 1931 to Isaac and Lessie Fortenberry.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Wilson Funeral Home in Monticello, MS and continuing Monday, August 19, 2019 from 9:00 AM until service time at 11:00 AM at Wilson Funeral Home with graveside services following in Old Arm Cemetery in Silver Creek. Bro. Charles Nail will officiate the services, with Wilson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Zolon Ward, her parents Isaac and Lessie Fortenberry, brother Robert Ray Fortenberry; sister Frances Elizabeth Fortenberry.

After teaching and influencing students for more than 30 years, she retired from Lawrence County School District as Principal of Monticello Elementary School. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma for 50 years.

Celeste, known as Big Granny, was very loving, caring and supportive to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Celeste is survived by her daughter Carmen and husband Steve Garrett, two grandchildren Joshua Garrett and wife Kail; Will Garrett and wife Amanda; five great grandchildren Wyatt, Walker, Beau, Nolon and Emma Garrett.
