It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia Carpenter, a beloved member of our community, who passed away on January 22, 2025, at the age of 91. Sylvia was known for her unwavering faith, warm heart, and the joy she brought to everyone she encountered.
Sylvia was a loving wife to her "Nicky" for almost 73 years. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and shared memories. She was also a devoted mother to 4 children, a proud grandmother to 8 grandchildren, and a cherished great-grandmother to 21 great-grandchildren.
To her grandchildren, Sylvia was affectionately known as "That Mama," a nickname given to her by her oldest grandson, Aaron, and it became a name she held dear. Every grandchild called her by this beloved name, a testament to the deep love and special bond she shared with them.
She loved attending her church. Her Sunday school class was more than just a group of friends—it was a family. Sylvia found immense "JOY" in the fellowship of her class, where laughter and love were abundant, and her presence was always a comforting reminder of God's grace. Her dedication to nurturing the spiritual growth of others was a testament to her deep faith and loving spirit.
In addition to her devotion to the Lord, Sylvia was an incredibly creative soul. She enjoyed painting, sewing, crafting, and quilting, often making beautiful handmade gifts that touched the hearts of all who received them. Her hands were as skilled with fabric and paint as they were with prayer, and her creations will continue to bring warmth and comfort to her family for years to come.
Sylvia was also an avid reader, enjoyed watching westerns, and had a passion for watching sports, often cheering on her children and grandchildren during games. Her love of sports extended to watching various games on TV, where she could often be found cheering for her favorite teams. Beyond her many talents and interests, Sylvia was known for her incredible cooking, especially her famous biscuits and gravy, which became a cherished dish whenever family came to visit.
Her ability to bring people together through both food and faith was unmatched, and her legacy will continue to inspire and comfort those who were touched by her kindness.
Sylvia was a loving wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother to many, all of whom were blessed by her love and guidance throughout her life. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Wesley Farrar; mother, Lillie Dean Farrar; and a grandson, Green Beret Staff Sargent Aaron Holleyman.
Survivors include her husband, George N. Carpenter Jr. of Monticello, MS; sons, George W. Carpenter (Kathy) of Ridgeway, SC and Christopher Carpenter of Monticello, MS; daughters, Glenda Carpenter Holleyman (Ross) of Millers Creek, NC and Vickie Carpenter Berryhill (Bubba) of Smithdale, MS; 8 grand children and 21 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you considering making memorials to any of the following charities: Gideons, Samaritan's Purse, or Wounded Warrior Project. Thanks for all of the love shown to our family.
