Obituary

Sandra Lynn King Turnage, 77, of Monticello, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at her home on October 31, 2026. Sandra was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to her parents, Jesse and Vela Mason King.

Visitation service will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

If you ever met Sandra, you already know that to know her was to love her. She grew up in Divide Community, but due to her father’s work in the steel mill, she lived in Gary Indiana for a few years where she loved to ice skate. Sandra had the voice of an angel and sang beautifully and played the accordion as well as the piano, inspiring many others to learn the piano as well. She played by ear, which allowed her to listen to any piece of music and then replicate that on the piano.

She and some friends were singing at Monticello Methodist Protestant Church where she met her husband, George. She caught his eye and he winked at her while she sang until she returned the wink. And the rest is history.

Sandra graduated from Topeka-Tilton High School in 1966 and married the love of her life. She worked as a secretary at a law office for quite some time, but once they started to build their family she chose to devote herself to being at home with her children, whom she loved fiercely and unconditionally. A true Proverbs 31 woman, Sandra was a devoted wife, Mama, MawMaw, sister and friend. She treasured her loved ones and embraced every moment with them. She was a nurturer by nature, and the children in the neighborhood knew they were always welcome at Mrs. Sandra’s – “she never turned us kids away” and “she always loved you through all your mistakes and misdeeds.”

She was always there for people and always made time for you as a friend, a confidante, prayer partner, someone to laugh or cry with, a little feisty and full of good humor, but most importantly, a strong woman of God, bold about her faith, full of Christ-like love, and committed to knowing that you experienced the love of God that she had.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Vela Mason King;

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, George Turnage; a son, Phillip Turnage (Sheri); her daughter, Janene Bennett (Seth), a son, Jeffrey Turnage; her grandson, Logan Bennett; and a sister, Velma Wade, and countless friends.
