O. Smith
July 23, 1928 – March 1, 2019
Glyn Olyn "Hobo" Smith was born July 23, 1928 in Lawrence County,
Mississippi to Fred Olyn "Doc" and Daisy Lerue "Red" Daughdrill Smith. He
passed from this life on March 1 at the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Medical
Center in Jackson, Mississippi after a brief illness.
He was blessed to be active and able to work until a few days before his death.
As a young man he logged with his father and Uncle, Joe Troy Smith. He served
in the U.S. Army in the Korean War from 1950-52. He began working as a
pipeliner in 1952, and later was employed offshore with Santa Fe Corp. until
his "first" retirement. For the next twenty-two years he was employed as a
school bus driver for the Lawrence County School District – a job he enjoyed
until his "second" retirement at the age of 87. Hobo was a faithful member of
the Powells Grove Pentecostal Church (Jayess).
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Donald Lloyd "Slick"
Smith, his son Billy Wayne Smith, and one great-grandson Chance Cooper.
Survivors include his wife of thirty four years, June Wallace Smith of Jayess,
his daughters; Nellie Wanez Ballard of Jayess, Frances Deloris Adams of
Shuqualak, MS; a son, Bren Olyn Smith of Jayess; and "children of the heart"
Marlin and Margrit Wallace of Madison, MS.
He is also survived by one brother Kenneth "Brother" Smith of Mount Olive,
MS; a sister, Frances "Pat" Neal of Monticello; one sister-in-law Fleda Smith of
Sontag; and nine grandchildren, twenty-four great grand-children, as well as a
host of nieces, nephews, family, church family, neighbors, friends.
