Obituary

Annie Elizabeth Godfrey Poole, aged 93 passed away on Friday, December 16, 2016, at Lawrence County Nursing Center in Monticello, MS.
Elizabeth was born on November 11, 1923. She was the daughter of James Edwin and Velma Blackwell Godfrey. She was raised in Fernwood, MS, and graduated valedictorian of her high school class. She attended MS State College for Women and was student teaching at Monticello High School when she met the love of her life, and husband of 62 years, the late John Ray Poole. Elizabeth taught school for many years before serving as church secretary for Monticello Baptist Church for 22 years. Mrs. Poole will be remembered by those who knew her for her sweet, caring spirit as well as her flower gardens and her talent for flower arranging. She was a longtime very active member of Monticello Baptist Church where she taught a women's Sunday school class. Mrs. Poole was active in many civic groups in Monticello. She was a charter member of the Riverside Garden Club and especially enjoyed her service in the organization. Most of all, "MamaRay" looked forward to spending time with her granddaughter and great grandchildren.
There will a time of visitation Monday, December 19, 2016 at Monticello Baptist Church from 10:00 AM until service time at 11:00 AM. Graveside services will follow at the Monticello Municipal Cemetery in Monticello, MS. Kenneth Roberts and Reverend Tim McCaffrey will officiate.
Mrs. Poole is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Poole Barlow (Robert) of Terry, MS; her granddaughter Jessica Vaughn (Zachary); two great grandchildren, Jackson Monroe Vaughn and Katherine Elizabeth Vaughn; her sister Edwina Walker (Winton); her niece Santa Elizabeth Walker; and nephews Edwin Walker, Steve Trotter and Alan Trotter.
She is preceded in death by her parents James Edwin and Velma Godfrey; her husband John Ray Poole.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Lawrence County Nursing Center for Mrs. Poole's excellent care and for making her a part of their "family"; to Dr. and Mars. Richard G. Burris; and to the wonderful staff at Hospice Ministries.
