Amy Jean
Chance
January 17, 1942 – April 11, 2022
Amy Jean Chance passed away peacefully on Monday April 11, 2022, after a long battle with
dementia. Amy was born on January 17, 1942, to Eugene and Katie Cooley in Selma,
Alabama. Amy was the wife of Johnny Chance and they shared many years together. They
met in high school and had their first date on Valentine's Day 1958. They raised two children,
Alan and Gina together.
Amy had a deep love of animals, in particular dogs, and was known for taking in a stray dog or
two that needed a loving home. She was also a talented painter who loved painting
lighthouses. Amy had a deep sense of faith and enjoyed listening to the Gaither Brothers, "How
Great Thou Art." It is her faith that has now carried her home into the arms of the Lord. A loving
wife, mother, and grandmother, she will be greatly missed by those who loved her and upon
whom she left an indelible mark on their hearts.
Amy is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Johnny C. Chance of Brandon, MS, her
son, Don Alan Chance (Teresa) of Charlestown WV, her daughter, Gina E. Lonsdale (Kent), of
Wilmington, DE, her granddaughter, Melissa G. Chance, her brother-in-law, James House as
well her step grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces. Amy is preceded in death by her
father and mother, Eugene and Katie Cooley, and her brother-in-law, Joe Chance, and her
sister-in-law, Tanya House.
Services for Amy will be held on Saturday May 7th at 11 am at Wilson Funeral Home,
Monticello, MS. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Alzheimer's
Association (https://www.alz.org/), Monticello United Methodist Church or Lawrence County, MS
Animal Shelter.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation for the years of love and care she
received at Jacquith Nursing Home and to Kare in Home Hospice for their compassionate care
during the last few weeks.
